Junior squash players and coaches in Norfolk enjoyed a coaching weekend with England Squash's High Performance Coach and Academy Director Mike Harris on April 18 and 19.
A three-hour Coach Workshop on the Friday evening was followed on Saturday with training sessions for all Norfolk's four boys County squads, and a group of mixed age girls.
A total of 12 coaches and 40 players were able to engage in the sessions and gain great benefit from Mike's knowledge, demonstrations and enthusiasm.
Tony Henden, from Norfolk Junior Squash, said: “The sessions included discussion on grip analysis, movement skills, coaching and playing styles, serve and return of serve, developing the rally, basic game plan, solo practices, conditioned games and mental approach. Of equal importance was the opportunity for the county's existing and future coaches to gather, and gain information and motivation from learning about the possibilities of becoming further involved within squash coaching, as a part-time or full-time career.
“We have some great coaches in Norfolk, but I believe that increasing the size and quality of the County's Squash coaching workforce is essential in continuing to grow and develop our County Juniors. Mike Harris's England Squash workshop, and County training sessions provide the perfect environment for us to do this, and I would urge any other Counties to do the same. We are certainly already looking forward to a future workshop with Mike.”
