Norfolk U15 boys gain experience in inter-counties tie

The Norfolk Boys Under 15 squash team travelled to Middlesex to compete in the Inter Counties Stage II on January 24 and gained much needed experience and honour, if no prizes.

The Norfolk team faced hosts Middlesex, old rivals Suffolk and Berkshire, in the four-way tie.

Depleted by the late illness of two of their top seeds, the four remaining players, Alex Coburn, Robby Coates, Izaak Butler and Drew Butchart, had to play one or two strings higher than expected. Faced with opposition older, bigger and more experienced, they battled with fortitude and good humour.

All four boys competed in every match they played, scoring points in virtually all individual games. The closest they came to success was against Berkshire when both Alex at No 1 and Drew at No 4 both won a game before losing 3-1.

Without any doubt, of all the counties represented, Norfolk in their new team outfits were far-and-away the best-dressed.

Final score: 1. Suffolk 54 points, 2. Middlesex 47 points, 3. Berkshire 32 points, 4. Norfolk 4 points.
