Diss move to top of Junior Squash League with double win

The latest round of Norfolk Junior League matches took place at EAT&SC in Norwich on March 2 and 9.

In Division 1, East Anglia I opened their league programme with a 3-1 win over Fakenham I as Luke Perry beat Chris Savory 3-1 while Tom Morris powered to a 3-0 win over Matt Burton. Jono Lynn pulled a game back for Fakenham 3-0, but Fakenham conceded the top tie to East Anglia as they could only provide three players on the day.

In the second match, a strong Diss team completed a 4-0 whitewash against Fakenham, with wins for Andy Whiting (walkover), Jack Bell 3-1 over Chris Savory, Dan Betts 3-1 over Matt Burton and Lewis Davy 3-0 against Jono Lynn.

The final match of the day was a very close-fought affair which saw Diss edge out East Anglia by 3 ties to 1. Andy Whiting beat Seb Denby 3-1 at the top of the order while Jack Bell ground out a close-3-2 win over Luke Perry. Even closer was Dan Betts' 3-2 win over Tom Morris, which went to 9-7 in the fifth. East Anglia's Thomas Belshaw pulled out a great performance to come back from 1-0 down to beat Lewis Davy 3-1.

Smarting from their second round defeats in Division 2, the East Anglia II team were strengthened by the inclusion of Thomas Belshaw, and powered to a 16-0 win over Fakenham, with Tom Belshaw, Chris Crawford, Hugh Williams and Adam Dye all winning comfortably 3-0.

Fakenham's second match against Beccles proved much closer. Commanding 3-0 wins for Robert Mattocks (Beccles) and Adam Sinkins (Fakenham) set the tie up nicely. Fakenham took the initiative by winning the first games in both final matches with Sam Lanham (F) going on to defeat Dominic Skuse (B) 9/5, 9/3, 8/10, 9/4. Jason Kent (B) however recovered to record a similar 3-1 victory over Oliver Bacon-Hilton (F) for the Suffolk team to square the tie at 9 points each.

East Anglia were looking to complete a clean sweep in their final match against Beccles and Chris Crawford, Hugh Williams and Adam Dye managed to complete their second matches without dropping a game to ensure the Norwich club's win. Star performer of the day however was Beccles' Robert Mattocks, who also produced his second win in the closest match of the day, 7/9, 10/8, 10/8, 9/3 over Tom Belshaw to prevent the clean sweep and give a final result of East Anglia 14 Beccles 3.
