Exciting matches as first junior squash league nears its climax

The penultimate round of the Norfolk Junior League saw further exciting and close matches take place in Division 1 and Division 3.

With Fakenham 1 unable to raise a team, Bannatynes I travelled to EAT&SC to complete their fixture. James Cultien (EA) made a welcome return to Junior Squash competition to take on the improving Alex Foster (BAN), and was rewarded with a hard fought 3-1 victory. Luke Perry (EA) was too strong for Harry Lillig (BAN) at number 2, but the 3rd and 4th string matches proved extremely close.

Tom Morris (EA) fought back well from 2-1 down to beat a battling Jordan Creed 3-2. Tom Whitlam (BAN) playing in his first ever Junior Squash event performed splendidly to recover from a 9-0 drubbing in the fourth game to clinch the match 10-8 in the fifth set against Michael Fielden (EA), and give Bannatynes their only match win. Final Result EAT&SC 15pts Bannatynes 6 Pts.

In the Division 3 Matches at Bannatynes, the Fakenham III team, already having been virtually assured of the league win, again proved too strong for the opposition. With Andrew Black and Ryan Seymour winning both matches, and Sam Lanham, Jade Spalding and Joe Groom winning one match each.

Dominic Skuse from Beccles II was the only player to inflict a defeat on a Fakenham player, recovering from 1-2 to clinch a fine win 3-2. With EAT&SC III having completed their fixtures and finishing in a comfortable second place. Bannatynes II and Beccles II played out the final Division 3 fixture for 3rd/4th position. With Beccles having gained only 3 more league points by virtue of Dominic's earlier win, there was all to play for.

Dominic completed a comfortable 3-0 win over Jake Bond (BAN), but both Issac Rolph and Liam Bond gained walkovers for Bannatynes following injury to Alex Clayton. This left Jessica Arneil (BAN) and Sam Burrows (BEC) to fight out the last match with nothing to choose between the teams. Sam moved to a 2-0 lead but Jessica fought back to draw level at 2-2. The last game could have gone either way, but with Sam winning 9-7 in the fifth to tie the match at 2 games each and produce a final match score of Bannatynes II 10 Pts, Beccles II 8 Pts, Beccles retained third position by the narrowest of margins.
