Norfolk's up and coming junior squash players came together to battle it out at the May Grand Prix tournament held at Diss and Harleston Squash clubs with a first time winner in the top group.
There were seven groups in total which illustrates the great development work going on within Norfolk .
In group 1 East Anglia 's Alex Williams won his first Grand Prix of the season beating Adam Simkin from Fakenham in the final. It was a gruelling affair with the first game going to an amazing 19-17 score to Alex. He then cruised through the next two games to upset the seedings and claim the top spot. Jamie Foyster finished in a best-ever third spot and it was also pleasing to see two members of the under 15 squad breaking through into the top group – Tom Snowling and Alex Coburn.
Group two was won by the ever-improving Milo Butler who's front game was the most impressive out of all the entrants. Milo, who is aged only eleven, is a real prospect for the future as he was able to beat Sam Henden and Martin Jolly in the final stages. It was also great to see Giles Evans back competing after a disrupted season due to injury and illness as he won the lower sub group beating Robby Coates and Sam Crafer.
In group 3 Milo 's older brother, Izaak made it a family double as he won his group with ease, firstly by beating Liam Mooney and then Jesse Baker and finally Jagan Crane. Liam Bond improved his ranking by two places with some excellent serving and drop shots. Liam is another one to keep an eye on in the future.
Group 4 was a very competitive group with Sam McCluskey beating the favourite, Phil Davies 2 – 0. In third place was Kieran Dodman followed by Alice Heffer, Bonnie Butler and finally Daniel Heffer.
Group 5 was won by Lydia Brownlow, followed by Callum Boyce, Olivia Boyce, Lloyd Potter, Charlie Simpson and lastly Bradley Nobbs
Group 6 was the most competitive of all the groups as almost all the games were 2 – 1 in score. The eventual winner was Joshua Hall, who beat Claire Jolly and Finn Cutting in the top sub group. Lottie Brownlow was too strong for Emily McCluskey and Lewis Robinson in the bottom sub group.
Group 7 was dominated by Harleston and Broadland players. It was a pretty tight affair but Ollie Farmer from Harleston managed to win the group, followed by Bronwyn Moxey, Jude Bickley, Joshua Davis, Ryan Evans, Roberta Longley and then James Longley
The next Grand Prix is at the UEA on Sunday June 13, 2010. More details and an application form can be found on the coming events page.
