Norfolk 's Under 17 boys squash team was in Inter Counties competition action against Cambs, Lincs and Northants at the St Ivo Squash Club in St Ives on October 24.
Despite several missing players, the first match started well against Northants after Alex Coburn at No5 and top string Harry Taylor won 3-1 and 3-0, respectively, whilst Josh Brownlow (No3) and Sam Lanham (No4) both came back from 2-0 to claim a game each before finally conceding 3-1. With the match tied it came down to Oli Bacon-Hilton to do his best at No2. Unfortunately, Oli suffered a hamstring injury in the first game and had to concede the match.
Against local rivals Cambs, Harry had to fight to stay concentrated, losing the third game due to unnecessary errors, but eventually winning 3-1 over Tom Blair. Josh Brownlow fought hard to overcome losing the first two games 6-11, by winning the third game 15-13 in a test of nerve. His opponent managed to regain his composure enough to secure a win for Cambs in the 3rd string match 3-1. Alex, Sam and Oli all lost 3-0.
In the final match against Lincs, the Norfolk team came up against their strongest opponents of the day. Sam and Josh were treated to lessons on how to move around the court better, both succumbing to 3-0 defeats. Alex played well, learning lessons of minimising mistakes from previous matches to eventually win 3-1, securing the only points for Norfolk . Harry, despite losing 3-0, played very well against the highly rated Hamish Falconer to bring the weekend's matches to a close.
Final results: 1 Lincs 53 points, 2 Cambs 37 points, 3 Northants 29 points, 4 Norfolk 15 points.
