Norfolk boys squash teams chalk up inter-counties success

Norfolk's Under-17s boys squash teams put in a superb effort in the first round of the inter counties matches last weekend (October 25) in Hertfordshire, while the Under-13 team achieved equal success against East Anglian opponents in Norfolk.

The Under-17 squad, consisting of Harry Taylor, Jordan Creed, Connor Doy, Adam Sinkins, Alex Oliver and Louis Kemp, managed to beat Middlesex by 3 matches to 2 and gave Hertfordshire and Essex a good run for their money losing both ties by 4 matches to 1.

Against an Essex side boasting three top 10 British ranked players this was always going to be a very difficult tie, but Alex Oliver playing at five scored a very good 3-2 victory.

The second tie, against Middlesex, saw Harry Taylor, Jordan Creed and Adam Sinkins all secured excellent 3-0 wins.  With Alex Oliver also gaining a leg, Norfolk took the tie and the bonus points.

In the final tie, against a strong Herts side, the Norfolk boys all put in a great effort with Louis Kemp and Connor Doy both working hard but just losing out to stronger opponents. At the top of the order, Harry Taylor had yet another finely taken win and Jordan Creed, improving with every game, put up a good battle, narrowly losing 3-2.

Norfolk finished a respectable third with 23 points. Team manager Bruce Bushell was very pleased with how the Norfolk side had done: “We knew we were up against some strong sides with national ranked players, so to win one tie and compete in the other two was a really good effort by the six lads.”

The Under-13 team hosted Herts, Suffolk and Essex and called on a very young side to contest the tie.

In the first match against Herts, William Henden playing the regional U13 Champion, Jagan Crane and Liam Bond all came within a whisker of putting Norfolk on the scoresheet, but all matches were lost 3-0.

In the second match, against another young side from Essex, it was a similar story, where Sam Henden, Milo Butler and again Jagan Crane came very close to snatching games before going down 3-0. William Henden finally put Norfolk on the score sheet by taking the first game 13-11 against Fraser Linning before going down 3-1.

In the final match, against a severely weakened Suffolk side, Sam Henden (3-2) Milo Butler (3-0) and Jagan Crane (3-0) gained morale boosting wins and William Henden put in another competitive performance against an older player before losing 3-1.

Team manager, Tony Henden, said: “With most of the team being available to play at this age group for the next two years, and other younger players already involved in the Under-13 squad, there are plenty of reasons to feel optimistic about future competitions in this age group.”

Philip Davis also attended as reserve and played three enjoyable matches against opponents from the visiting counties.

Final Result: Herts 59 Pts, Essex 42 Pts, Norfolk 19 Pts, Suffolk 8 Pts.
