Norfolk 's Under 19 and Under 15 boys squash teams were in Inter Counties competition action last Sunday.
A battling U19 team finished a very creditable third, only missing out on second by a single match win, while an under strength U15 team finished fourth in their tie.
The U19s kicked off their home tie at Norwich 's EATSC with a narrow, but crucial 2-3 defeat to Bucks. Harry Taylor at No1 produced a comfortable 3-0 win. Jordan Creed at No2 had to work much harder and came out on top in a five-set thriller. Adam Sinkins at No3 went down battling very hard 2-3. Tom Morris at No4 fought hard without winning a game and Alex Oliver picked up a single game at No5.
In the second tie, Norfolk went down 5-0 to a very strong Herts team, who remained undefeated without dropping a single game all day. Louis Kemp at No5 and Adam came closest to winning games.
In their final match, against local rivals Cambs, Harry , Jordan , Adam and Tom all racked up accomplished 3-0 wins in the top four slots against competitive opponents. Louis Kemp at No5 found his opponent too experienced and lost 3-0.
Finishing in third, the team now go through to the second round Plate competition in January.
Final result: 1 Herts 60 points, 2 Bucks 36, 3 Norfolk 26, 4 Cambs 5.
With four team members unavailable or ill, the Norfolk Boys U15 team travelled to Essex with a tough challenge.
In the first match against Essex all players lost 3-0 with best performance coming from William Henden playing at No2 who, after a slow start, matched his much older opponent in the remaining games before going down 3-0. Johnnie Carmichael-Plester with some aggressive volleying and ‘tennis-like' smashes also troubled his opponent and was closest to giving Norfolk their first scoring point.
Against Herts all players scored more points but were still unable to gain their first game win. Alex Coburn, Johnnie Carmichael-Plester and Sam Crafer all came within a couple of points of gaining the first point, and William was extremely unlucky not to put Norfolk on the score sheet going down 8/11,12/14,10/12 to Tim Richards the Herts No2.
Norfolk faired similarly in their last tie against Suffolk , who were looking to finish in the top two places. Both Alex Coburn, at No1, and Giles Evans almost extended their opponents Josh Turmel and Ryan Betts into a fourth game, and finally in the last match of the day Will Henden managed to win his first game 13/11 against Ed Curtis amidst enthusiastic applause from his team mates. Will tired to lose the match 3-1 but all of the team played with excellent behavior and enthusiasm.
Sam Henden also travelled as reserve, losing his 2 matches 3-0 and 3-1.
Final Result: 1 Essex 54 points, 2 Suffolk 43, 3 Herts 37, 4 Norfolk 1.
